I make travel videos and promote holiday destinations via social media, travel shows and talks. I use a documentary approach that focuses on the destination, not me! Recently I have specialised in the Islamic world including Morocco, Oman, Pakistan and Azerbaijan.

About Waterfront Films
I shot my first cine film on Super 8 in 1966 and have not stopped since then! My first holiday with my future wife was camping in Iceland in 1975. We still enjoy adventure travel but now like a bit more luxury!

Travel and photography are intertwined when I go on holiday. I love to research destinations in depth, plan trips in detail and promote destinations before and after travel. I use You Tube, Pinterest, Facebook and Flickr. I enjoy travel trade shows and talks e.g. WTM, Muslim Shopping and Travel Show and Oman and Saudi Arabia road shows.. I have participated in a Q and A session on Pakistan at the Luxury Travel Show in London, working with Xperience Pakistan. I have also spoken from the floor at travel talks at the Indian and Pakistan High Commissions in London. I do not write generally but have has one article on Pakistan published.

I am currently editing video of Morocco, Oman and Azerbaijan. My next projects are Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. I prefer a documentary, story telling style of video. I do not do hand held selfies walking down streets! My target audience is older and wants to know about the destination not me. I have a specialist interest in railways and many of my viewers are older, global rail travellers.

Promoting Northern Pakistan

After a wonderful holiday in Northern Pakistan I returned determined to publicise the wonderful landscapes and friendly people of this underrated region. I started posting travel videos, wrote an article for a Pakistan magazine, and encouraged exhibitors from Gilgit-Baltistan at a time when Pakistan had no national representation at the World Travel Market, London. Subsequently I attended travel shows and was invited by Xperience Pakistan to join their question and answer session at the Luxury Travel Fair, London. At the WTM I was pleased to be presented with a small gift by the federal Minister for tourism in recognition of my support.

Results

My video on the Kalash people had 1.6 million viewings. This is an ongoing, unofficial crusade to change perceptions of Pakistan. The country faces many problems but has great potential.

Kazakhstan

Promoting Kazakhstan and Almaty

This year, Visit Almaty led the Kazakhstan delegation at the World Travel Market presenting itself as a modern and welcoming destination - where the spirit of the Great Silk Road meets a vibrant city with stunning mountain resorts. The Almaty stand included Kazakh batyrs (warriors) and live performances by the Sazgen Sazy Ensemble playing traditional instruments like the dombra and kobyz. Artisans showcased jewelry and leatherwork, and guests were offered a taste of Kazakh hospitality and cuisine. It was a pleasure to meet representatives from Kazakhstan at the World Travel Market. I was also honoured to attend the Almaty Tourism Day in London. Thank you for your warm welcome and for showcasing your amazing country, crafts, music and cuisine. I was impressed by Kazakhstan’s rich historical and cultural sites. And by the diverse landscapes ranging from alpine lakes and snow-capped peaks to deserts and canyons. I hope to make Kazakhstan more visible to UK visitors. My social media will target off-the-beaten-path travellers who are seeking lesser-known destinations. I will follow up my contacts at WTM and welcome working with interested parties.

Publicity for Ecuador on social media, following a holiday there and the Love Ecuador marketing campaign. A new initiative at this time was the launch of the Tren Crucero tourist train, featured in one of my videos. Coffee and chocolate was also being highlighted in the official marketing.

My aim was to publicise and aid families trapped in bonded labour in Pakistan’s brick kilns. I came back from a holiday in India moved by the migrant families caught in a vicious circle of poverty and debt. Driven by extreme poverty, seasonal employment and pressing needs, men take out loans for critical expenses or daily living. But these loans come with an unimaginable price – they are bound to work at the kilns until they can repay their ever increasing debts. Generations of oppressed people live and work in Asian brick kilns, robbed of their freedom and human rights. These families are often the poorest of the poor. I sought crowd funding for a video exposing this modern slavery. I hoped to in turn use my documentary to raise funds for a variety of charities and faith groups helping Pakistani brick slaves. Such absolute poverty and degradation is hard to imagine. That’s why I asked people to donate generously to my Launchgood campaign. The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts of his body from the (Hell) Fire as he has freed the body-parts of the slave." “The alms are meant only for the poor and the needy and those who are in charge thereof, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free those in bondage, and to help those burdened with debt, and for expenditure in the Way of Allah and for the wayfarer. This is an obligation from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” ‘A man's true wealth is the good he does in this world." "The Most Merciful shows mercy to those who have mercy on others. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you.”

Results

My Assam video received some viewings but my crowd funding on the Muslim Launchgood platform did not take off at all. I remain interested in this project.
